Porsche 911 Performance Handbook by Bruce Anderson gives very detailed information about Porsche automobiles. The book covers a range of information about 911 cars with excellent detail and emphasis on engines including history, engineering, technical data and tuning. There is even a chapter dedicated to considerations for buying a used 911. Mr. Anderson has a vast 30 plus year history with Porsche cars and is certainly a leading authority on Porsche 911 cars and performance.
Additionally, Porsche 911 Red Book 1965-2005 by Patrick C. Paternie is an excellent resource with lots of information about model changes from year to year. It’s a handy size to travel with when you are going to check out a potential car for purchase. The chapters are grouped by model years using chassis and engine serial numbers to trace production history, color variations, interior appointments, options and customer racing packages. Factory reference codes for engines and transmissions are great keys to determining any 911's authenticity and are included in this compact guide.
Don't forget to get 101 Projects for your Porsche by Wayne R. Dempsey. This Author is an avid Early Porsche Enthusiast and lays out many projects in this book. The style and content make working on a Porsche accessible to anyone with the will to turn a few wrenches.
While you are at it, pick up How to Rebuild and Modify Porsche 911 Engines 1965-1989 by Wayne R. Dempsey. This book is a more in depth look at the Porsche engine with great guidance and photos. A must for any Early 911 Enthusiast.
The early Porsche 911’s are becoming increasingly difficult to find in today’s market. If you are in the market for one of these older cars, you must be diligent in your search to find the car you’re after. There are many pitfalls you must avoid in order to arrive with the dream car you’ve imagined. It’s a great idea to become familiar with the different models from each year and the differences between them. Reference books are excellent sources to arm yourself with, because as you learn about the models, your knowledge base helps spot inconsistencies in potential car purchase targets.
