1973 Carrera RS
The 1973 Porsche Carrera RS is now a legendary car and it remains a benchmark which many cars are judged against. To this day, Porsche tries to regain the magic of this classic car. Enthusiast magazines are continuously printing new articles pitting the 1973 Carrera RS against newer Porsche models, older Porsches and even non-Porsche cars. Just to be compared to the 1973 Carrera RS is certainly an honor.
In the Early 911 Enthusiast circle, many people are even re-creating their cars as Carrera RS models and variations thereof. They do so not as so called clones
or replicas,
they're doing it as a testament to, and in the spirit of, the sports purpose car that Porsche built.
In 1972, Porsche developed the Carrera RS prototype, which would go into production for the 1973 model year. Porsche planned to build at least 500 cars to homologate the model for GT racing. Note that this prototype pictured below didn't have the ducktail
spoiler that came on the production cars.

In 1973, the Carrera RS was a limited production option with three versions for both racing and road cars.
The option M 471 RS Sport is the 'lightweight' car. The lightweight racing version weighed 2,117 pounds and came with a 210 horsepower 2.7 liter engine. The 2.4 liter S engine had its bore increased to 90mm and was strengthened with Nikasil cylinder wall coating.
The option M 491 RS Rennsport is the 2.8 liter RSR racing Carrera and has larger engine displacement as well as wider fenders. The Carrera RS was a huge success and by the time produciton ended 1,590 of the touring and lightweight cars were built.
The option M 472 RS Touring was the road car with comfort options like the 911S.

All of the cars benefitted from increased rear wheel and tire size. To fit the larger wheels, the rear fenders were mildly flared on the lightweight and touring cars. The Fuchs alloys for the RS measure 7x15 inches wide in the rear. The RSR cars have both front and rear flares and are much less subtle, allowing for even larger wheels to be used for racing.
