1967

1967 was a siginificant year for the 911. This year, the 911S Super  was born. The Super model car came with some exciting upgrades, including a 160 horsepower 2.0 liter engine on a car weighing somewhat less than the standard 911.

This performance increase solidified the status of the 911S as a premier sports car. The S model also had Koni shocks and a 15mm anti-roll bar in front and Porsche introduced a 16mm anti-roll bar in the rear. The disc brakes were ventilated.

Fuchs

logo  Another stroke of genius came in 1967 when the Fuchs forged aluminum wheels were introduced. The first year wheels were only 4.5 inches wide. As everyone who appreciates a Porsche knows, the Fuchs wheels are iconic symbols of the Porsche 911. As such, the Fuchs five-spoke wheel endured a production run lasting many years, into the late eighties.

Targa

1967 TargaAlso in 1967, the 911 Targa arrived in production. Targa, Italian for Shield became a mainstay of the 911 line throughout production. The early 911 Targas featured a soft plastic rear window and a removable roof. Rear glass windows became available in 1968.

Goodies kept coming from Porsche in 1967. Here's another treat: The 1967 911R. The 911R Rennsport, German for Racing. The 911Rs were a much lightened version of the 911. Porsche employed trickery like plexiglass windows and fiberglass body parts to help widdle down the weight. Attention to small details is what gives the edge to Porsche. These 210 horsepowered Weber 46 IDA equipped lightweights tipped the scales at only 1830lbs.

Is that British or American lbs? Is there a difference? Answer: No .In Great Britain, the yard, the avoirdupois pound, the troy pound, and the apothecaries pound are identical with the units of the same names used in the United States.   See, you did learn something at Early 911 Enthusiast!

There were 23 built in 1967 so your only hope for owning one is to build one yourself, so go ahead and build it. That is what being an Early 911 Enthusiast is all about! If you are an Über rich type of enthusiast and already own one, then share the wealth with your Porsche brethren and drive your car!

1968

lux engine bay911 car  1968 brought a few new models into the equation. The regular 911 became the 911L Lux or Luxury and was the same as the European 911S except it had lower horsepower (130hp). The 911S was not available in the U.S. There were two models available in the U.S., the regular 911 and the 911L. The 911L had the features of the 911S except for the engine. The U.S. models were included with amber (front) and red (rear) side marker lights.

emblemThe 911T Touring model was introduced in Europe and came at a lower price, which also included less performance. The 911T had 110 horsepower and solid, not ventilated, brake discs.

In addition, a new and important safety item was incorporated in 1968. A dual circuit braking system became standard equipment on the cars.

Do you like Sportomatic transmissions? 1968 is the first year cars were available with the Sportomatic 4-speed semi-automatic transmission.

Sportomatic: semi-automatic shifting

To select a gear, the connection from engine to gearbox must be interrupted. This is effected by a separator clutch which automatically disengages as soon as the selector lever is moved in the direction of the gear. Should the gear lever be moved unintentionally, the engine speed would increase because of the reduced load on the engine. this would put a heavy load on the clutch when the selector lever is released.
